Causes of Low Blood Pressure
The most common cause of low blood pressure is overly aggressive use of hypertension medications (more on that in a moment). But it can also be caused by several other underlying conditions. Sometimes, the reason for low blood pressure is obvious to the healthcare professional from the history and physical exam. In other cases, further tests are needed. In healthy people, especially athletes, low blood pressure is a sign of good cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) health. But low blood pressure can be a sign of an underlying problem — especially in the elderly — where it may cause inadequate blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs.

Treating Low Blood Pressure
The treatment for low blood pressure is usually pretty simple. Eating more salt and drinking more fluid works for most people. A belief exists in the community that low blood pressure is a disease entity which causes dizziness, weakness and headache requiring treatment with salt, fluids, tea, coffee and fruit juices. We strongly recommend further studies to clearly ascertain the existence of low blood pressure syndrome in our population as a myth or a disease. If low blood pressure is the normal state for a patient, then there will be no symptoms. However, if low blood pressure is symptomatic, then the patient may feel lightheaded and dizzy, unsteadiness as blood flow to the brain is decreased.
